Følg Simona på instagram her.

ENG: Last week I met up with Simona Uvarovaite who participated in the recent Second Hand Fashion Show. She has a cool approach to sustainability, which is that you might as well use fabrics that has already been produced, in terms of discarded garments. I am a big fan of upcycling, and when I looked through the participants of the Secondhand Fashion Show,  Simona stood out because her designs were so wearable.
I think it’s really important that we get some new designers on the field, that can show you how to re-design old clothes in a way that ordinary people want to wear!

Follow Simona on instagram here. I really hope that she gets her own label one day. Upcycling is for me one of the most sustainable approaches, because it gives new life to something that would otherwise be thrown out. But there are some obvious challenges; for example it is difficult to get enough of the same material, and it may be difficult to make different sizes. At the same time, one can never be sure that all the pieces can be 100% identical.

These challenges make may be the reason why upcycling never becomes mainstream, but I think it’s an important part of sustainable fashion.

  • I am going to follow her for sure, as she does what would be my dream job! Upcycled pieces will always be unique, but I think you can make larger quantities if you use garments like jeans, men’s shirts or wool jumpers, wich can be bought by weight. Would be so great to do that and do it as a development project, like the recycled People Tree 🙂

    • @Hanneke
Didn’t know this would be your dream job? 😀
Yes you can do a lot with the things you just mentioned. But I think today you’d be able to get anything by weight. Just imagine the amounts that go throughout H&M’s take back sceme, and that is all sorted by hand already.
